15 Things to do in Kansas City this Winter
Winters in Kansas City are rough. Especially since a lot of the fun activities that make this city so great are outdoors. However, I have decided to dig a little deeper and find some things to do in Kansas City during the freezing winter! Whether you just moved to the area or have been living here your whole life, there is something here for everyone.
1. Visit The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art
With 33,000 works of art representing major mediums The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art is one of the most recognised art museums in the country. With free admission there is no reason not to visit.
2.Visit Union Station
The Union Station is so much more than a train station. It has a planetarium, move theatre, Science City and an Xtreme Bugs Exhibit. According to their website, this is where Kansas City comes together.
3.Visit The National Museum of Toys/Miniatures
Whether you have children or not, I don’t think there is a better way to bring out the kid in you than visiting The National Museum of Toys/Miniatures.
4. Visit The Kansas City Zoo
Enjoy some indoor exhibits and stay warm at The Kansas City Zoo! Or take a walk on the wild side and explore some of their outdoor exhibits. Either way you won’t regret it. Adult general admission is $13.50 and child general admission is $10.50.
5. LEGOLAND Discovery Center Kansas City
Stay warm inside Legoland’s Discover Center in Kansas City. Don’t worry, if you don’t have kids and still want to visit there is a “No Kids Allowed Night” every third Monday of every month from 6-8 p.m. With over 3 million Lego bricks and Kingdom Quest & Merlin’s rides you’ll have a fantastic time. Tickets start at $15.45 for bookings made 24 hours in advance.
6. Visit The National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial
This is one of the largest collections of WWI artifacts in the world. With loads of events coming up this January and new exhibits it would be a shame if you were in Kansas City and didn’t take advantage of this outstanding museum. Admission is $14.00 for adults and $12.00 for children.
7. Visit The Kansas City Public Library
One of the most interesting parts of The Kansas City Public Library is the outside. So when you’re running to get into the heated inside make sure you take a minute and appreciate this unique exterior. Once your in, the library has tons of events planned pretty often so make sure to check the upcoming events page before you go! Or just enjoy a great read.
8. Enjoy TEDxKC | Ideas Worth Spreading
This local chapter of TED hosts satellite events throughout the year. It is independently organized and it brings a TED-like experience to the audience. The events are help at different places overtime like Kauffman foundation and the Google Fiber Lounge. So check out the schedule and see which TEDxKC event you want to attend.
9. Enjoy The Crossroads Arts District
First Fridays is an event that is on the first Friday of every month. It is a free event where attendees can enjoy all the sights, sounds and tastes the Crossroads has to offer. Stay warm by Gallery hopping, boutique shopping or enjoying some delicious food or drinks!
10. Eat Kansas City Barbeque
Kansas City is known for Barbeque. So checkout Travel Channel’s top picks here and indulge. However, my personal favorites are Gates, Arthur Bryant’s and Joe’s Kansas City Barbeque.
11. Take a Boulevard Brewery Tour
One of my favourite things to do in Kansas City is taking the Boulevard Brewery tour. Not only because it is one of my favourite beers, but because the brewery is awesome to experience. Plus depending what tour you take you get to enjoy a beer tasting. There are different tours you can take but one of them is free! Thats right, free!
12. Visit Amigoni Urban Winery
This Winery is located right in the history Daily Drover Telegram Newspaper building in the Stockyards District of the West Bottoms. Amigoni Urban Winery not only has great wines, but great deals. For just $6 you can taste 5 different wines and you can even add another wine to the tasting for just $1! If you aren’t the wine type, beer tastings are also available as well as small plates to munch on.
13. Drink at Little Freshie Coffee Shop
This is a tiny unique coffee shop with a handcrafted soda fountain and expresso bar. They also have all natural snow cones that are delicious! So don’t let its size steer you otherwise.
14. Visit Comedy City
Need a good laugh? Then Comedy City is the place for you. Improv shows are available Thursday-Sunday. Also Improv classes are also available, which are taught by the most experienced improvers in Kansas City!
15. Visit The Majestic | Jazz Club Downtown
Okay, so Kansas City is actually known for three things, and the third thing on that list is jazz music! This jazz club in particular is a lot more than just your regular jazz club. It is also a steakhouse.
