In Kansas City, MO there are more than 12,000 acres of parkland split up into 220 parks, 29 lakes and 100+ miles of trails and bike paths. You might be extremely surprised at what some of them have to offer. Here’s a sample of 10 different parks for relaxing, taking your dog, enjoying a picnic, going on a hike, disc golfing, fishing or enjoying a nice day at the park with your kids.


1. Relax at Loose Park

Loose Park is the perfect place to kick back and relax. It is by far one of Kansas City’s most popular parks. At 75 acres this park has plenty to offer. It includes a walking trail around the park, tennis courts, picnic tables, a rose garden, a playground and a beautiful pond.

2. Take your dog to Shawnee Mission Park

Shawnee Mission Park is loaded with activities, but what makes it really stand out from the rest is its’ extensive dog park! The 53-acre off leash area features a swimming area, trails, grassland and wooded areas for you dog to enjoy. Even if you don’t have a dog checking this park out is recommended it has fishing, a beach, marina, disc golf course and a campground.

3. Picnic at Donald J Hall Sculpture Park

Located in front of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art this park is home to 36 sculptures over 22 acres. It includes plenty of room to run around, enjoy the art or just relax while having a picnic on a beautiful day!

4. Hike at Parkville Nature Sanctuary

5. Enjoy the garden at The Ewing and Muriel Kauffman Memorial Garden

Located right in the heart of Kansas City, is a tranquil 2-acre garden. It includes brick pathways and limestone walls for a relaxing feel. This garden features 7,000 plants and is part of the Kauffman Legacy Park.

6. Disc Golf at Water Works Park

This course was used during the 2009 Disc Golf World Championships and also hosts the annual Kansas City Wide Open National Tour Event.

7. Fish at Longview Lake

Longview Lake has plenty of fish to offer including Channel Catfish, Largemouth bass, Walleye, Crappie, Common Carpe, White bass, Flathead catfish and more! It has 930 acres of water entertainment and plenty of shelter.

8. Take your kiddos to Penguin Park

This is a playground in North Kansas City that your kids will quickly become obsessed with. With three different play areas no child will feel left out. Plus the ground is padded with foam so if a little one falls they won’t get hurt.

9. Spend the day at Lake Truman

A wonderful place to get away. This Missouri state park is a solid 2 hours from Kansas City, but it is well worth the drive. Make a whole day out of it and rent a boat, go to the beach, grill out or just enjoy the view! Whatever you decide to do here you will not be let down!

Penn Valley Park has quite a few amenities including a skate park, tennis court, trails, picnic shelters, baseball diamonds and of course the Liberty Memorial.
